Finishing an application you did not complete

Coming back to a form you left, and what happens to an application that stays incomplete.

Leaving the form part way through is common. People start on a phone, get interrupted, or stop to find their passport. Your answers are kept, so you can come back.

If you had not paid yet

Nothing has been charged and no file exists in our queue. If you gave us your email address, we send you a link back to your application so you can pick up where you left off.

If you did not get that far, start again from the beginning. It takes a few minutes with your passport in front of you.

If you paid but the form is not finished

Your file exists and has a number, but it cannot be checked or filed while information is missing. Sign in to your tracking area with your file number and your email address, and complete what is missing there.

Nothing extra is charged for finishing. You are completing something you already paid for.

The most common thing left missing

A passport photo, an ID photo, or both. This is the single biggest reason applications stall after payment, and it is a two minute fix from a phone.

How long you have

Unfinished applications are not kept indefinitely, and unpaid ones are cleared out first. Passport scans on applications that were never paid for are deleted automatically after seven days.

If you come back after a long gap and your information has gone, you will have to start again. If you have already paid and your file has gone quiet, contact us rather than paying a second time.

If you have changed your mind

If you paid and no longer want to travel, tell us rather than leaving the file open. What we can do depends on how far the work has gone, and it is always better to say so early.
